Two excellent graphic novels I’ve read recently, Anya’s Ghost by Vera Brosgol and Zita the Space Girl by Ben Hatke.
Anya’s Ghost is the story of Anya, a Russian immigrant teenager who is desperately trying to fit in at her American school with an American crowd. When she accidentally brings a ghost home with her one day things begin to take a turn for the better or so she thinks. But she soon discovers her new friend isn’t as friendly as she originally thought.
Zita the Space Girl is the story of Zita, a young girl on a quest to save her best friend after he is taken through a wormhole by a mysterious creature. While on her journey, she befriends an interesting cast of characters stuck on a planet that seems doomed for destruction. This is seriously the cutest thing I’ve read in a long time. If it were a person, I would probably accidentally hug it to death. The story is fantastic and the art is simply amazing. Entertaining for kids of all ages. I’m looking forward to the sequel set to come out sometime next year.
